Untitled: Interior (DIE) (2003) commissioned by Now Festival, Nottingham is a continuation of McKenzie's investigation into the performativity of the mark in relation to the body. During the performance of Untitled: DIE at Arnolfini, McKenzie realised that the marks that he was making on the surface of the cube were not only visual but also aural, the sounds of the graphite upon the surface of the DIE were amplified on it and through it. Its interior became a mystery, a closed space, a locked away internal form. Untitled (Interior DIE) was an investigation into this interior space.
For this piece of work the prefabricated cube was opened up in order to de-construct
the internal space of the cube. The cube
become inverted, its outside showing all of
the battening and structural carpentry that for the original piece was hidden within the internal closed structure. The internal space of the cube was then painted white, the external left unpainted. McKenzie was then winched into this enclosed space and began to draw on to the internal surfaces of the cube. Contact microphones were attached on to each of the external walls of the cube that amplified the sounds of his body performing the drawing.
After the completeion of the drawing the artist was then removed from the space and the final white remaining face of the cube was put into place sealing and creating once more the internal un-seeable and unknowable space of the DIE.
